Transmission electron microscopic observation of the kidney, liver and colon of BFAD :
Transmission electron microscopic observation of the kidney, liver and colon of BFAD : SD rats fed with Philippine natural grade carrageenan for three months /
Oscar G. Gutierrez Jr. [and five others]
A three-month oral toxicity study of Philippine Natural Grade (PNG) carrageenan and conventionally processed (CP) carrageenan was performed in male and female Sprague Dawley rats. Transmission electron microscopic observation was performed on the liver and kidney of two male and two female rats in the control group as well as in the 5.0% PNG and CP carrageenan groups, and one of each sex in 0.5% and 1.5% PNG carrageenan groups. The colon from one animal in each sex of the control group, 5.0% PNG and CP carrageenan group were also observed. Electron microscopic observation revealed that there were no deposits of carrageenan in the liver, kidney and colon of rats treated with PNG or CP carrageenan. No significant toxic changes were also noted in these organs. (Author)
