Summary, etc. Objective: To determine the in-hospital mortality for acute myocardial infarction in tertiary hospitals in Metro Manila and to compare the clinical profile of patients with acute myocardial infarction admitted in the Philippine General Hospital and Philippine Heart Center Methods: prospective multicenter cohort involving 9 hospitals in Metro Manila. All patients with AMI who fulfilled 2 out of the 3 criteria were recruited within 24 hours from the onset of chest pain. Demographic and clinical variables including in-hospital and 5 weeks mortality, complications and medications given were recorded. Survival Analysis using the Kaplan Meier survival curve was done using the data obtained Results: Three hundred patients had been recruited from June 1992 to September 1993. The overall crude mortality rate was 12.3%. The PGH mortality rate was 23% and the PHC mortality rate was 5% Conclusion: The mortality rate from Acute Myocardial Infarction in the Philippines is comparable with that of the Western data. The high mortality rate in PGH could be due to the socio-economic status of the patients admitted in this hospital.
