| Summary, etc. | BACKGROUND: Burnout is a syndrome of depersonalization, emotional exhaustion and a sense of low personal accomplishment leading to decreased effectiveness at work. Residents are highly vulnerable to emotional and mental health concerns, and thus awareness of their well-being would help in the prevention of physician impairment.
OBJECTIVE: The study was done to measure the frequency and distribution of burnout among the resident physician trainees and medical interns in Manila Doctors Hospital.
METHOD: The survey was done in December 2005 using the following instruments a) Masclach Burnout Inventory (MBI), b) PRIME-MD Health Questionnaire and c) personal data and questions about health habits.
RESULTS: One hundred seventeen resident physician trainees and medical interns were invited to participate in the study. A total of 84 participants complied (76 percent), but only 74 completed the questionnaires (64 percent). For each additional increase in age by 1 year, the participant is less inclined to be burned out. Females were 28 percent more likely to be emotionally exhausted (EE) than males. Married physicians were more likely to be emotionally exhausted by 93 percent, those who were in a relationship were more likely to be emotionally exhausted by 15 percent, compared to those who were single. While singles were 14 percent more likely to have higher depersonalization scores, compared with married subjects. Those who were living alone were 2 times more likely to be emotionally exhausted than those who weren't. Thirty percent were more likely to have feelings of depersonalization. Financially, when the physician stood as the primary support in the family, he/she would be 11.0 percent more likely to be emotionally exhausted.
CONCLUSION: Further studies must be done in order to measure the real frequency of burnout in our country. There is urgency, more so because we are losing our physicians to greener pastures abroad. Preventive programs and proactive attitudes must be encouraged and implemented. (Author) |
