| Summary, etc. | BACKGROUND: At present, there is a significant decline in the number of physicians applying for residency training. The major reasons given for planning to quit residency were: work overload, low remuneration and plans of working abroad as another healthcare professional. Identifying stresses, coping mechanisms and recommendations to relieve stress among residents will allow the creation of strategies or formulate friendly policies to reduce and minimize the stresses experienced by the resident physicians.
OBJECTIVE: This study was conducted to identify the stressors experienced by DRH residents during training.
DESIGN: The study used a survey questionnaire which included respondents' data regarding age, sex, marital status, year level and department, and a list of stressors, coping mechanisms and recommendations to relieve stress.
RESULTS: Of the 43 respondents, only 74.4 percent answered the data on address and among those who answered, majority or 55.8 percent were from Tagum City while the rest from nearby cities and municipalities. The age range of the respondents was 28 to 37 years old with mean age of 32 years. Overall, heavy workload ranked first in the situational stressors followed by the patients' financial inadequacy and sleep deprivation with 76.7 percent followed closely by long working hours (74.4 percent). They cope with stresses by bearing in mind that it is just a part of training. Other coping mechanisms commonly employed were "think its part of giving service to patients" and "study harder and improve skills".
CONCLUSION: With the above results, this survey hopes to serve as a baseline study that would guide the department chairmen and training officers of the different residency training departments for the improvement of their respective residency training programs.
