Summary, etc. OBJECTIVE: To determine the patients needs, expectations and preferences in primary care visit.<br/><br/>DESIGN: Descriptive method using researcher-constructed survey questionnaire.<br/><br/>PATIENTS/PARTICIPANTS: One hundred forty-two new patients, randomly selected, 18-56 years old, were examined by medical residents at a university medical center, out-patient department. They were asked to complete a post-visit questionnaire regarding needs, expectations and preferences in the clinic.<br/><br/>MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Focused discussion of respondents answers, qualitative and quantitative assessment of the data from the questionnaire were done.<br/><br/>RESULTS: Patients reported preferences for young physicians 25-40 years old. Female patients preferred same sex examining physicians while male patients had no particular choice. Family involvement in their care was likewise emphasized. The respondents also favored health care providers who will do the decision-making regarding disease management for them, had good patient rapport and communication skills, elicited patients health beliefs and practices, provided health education and tailored teaching efforts to the different learning capacities of their patients. All these engendered patient satisfaction in their consultations and adherence to the recommended therapies.<br/><br/>CONCLUSION: Solicitation of the patients needs, expectations and preferences in his primary care visit is a highly significant aspect of the clinical encounter. This finding identified a need for further correlation studies between patient satisfaction, compliance to therapy and treatment outcomes.
