| Summary, etc. | Results<br/>A total of 65 resident physicians were included. They were asked to fill out a self administered questionnaire. Most of the respondents (67.7%) were graduates of the De La Salle University College of Medicine.<br/>Ninety five percent of the respondents claimed that they had formal training/lectures in filling out the cause of death section of death certificates during medical school. Eighty percent (80%) of the respondents have not read written guidelines on death certification, and about 75% of the respondents were not aware of any guidelines on death certification.<br/>Ninety five percent of the respondents were aware of the uses of cause of death data but only 18.5% knew that the underlying cause is used for statistical and research purposes. Only 12% felt adequately prepared in accomplishing death certificates.<br/>The proportion of completely filled-up death certificates varies from 32.3% to 84.6% depending on the case while overall acceptability ranges from 24.6% to 52.3%. As to availability of information, the proportion with information on the cause of death included listing of unacceptable entries, such as, modes of dying and signs and symptoms as cause-of-death.<br/>Conclusion<br/>Based on the results of the study, we conclude the resident physicians have limited knowledge in certifying cause of death as evidenced by errors in recording the cause of death.<br/>Objectives<br/>To determine the knowledge, attitudes and practices of resident physician in certifying cause of death at the De La Salle University Medical Center . |
