| Summary, etc. | The present study was designed to determine how some of the factors affecting compliance namely symptomatology, cost of medications, availability of resources, side effects, multiple medications, forgetfulness, frequency of dosing, caregivers and patient education would affect the compliance of hypertensive patients at Santo Tomas University Hospital Out Patient Department (STUH-OPD). Eighty hypertensive patients having their regular follow-ups at STUH-OPD Cardio Clinic were interviewed. The factors which had a significant effect in the compliance of these patients to their medications were availability of resources, with the married population and those with lower educational attainment being affected the most; presence of adverse effects eventually leading to discontinuation of the medication, forgetfulness, those with lower educational attainment being affected the most; presence of caregiver having a significant role with regards to encouragement, financial support and weight control; and good understanding of the physicians instruction and patient education regarding the disease and its complication having a positive effect on the compliance of these patients. |
