| Summary, etc. | This is a comparative study between children born to mothers with ages within the perimenopausal period (40-50 yrs. old) and children born to mothers with ages within the reproductive age group (20-39 yrs. old). This is an analytical case control study made in Malabon Elementary School. Stratified random sampling was done, in which ten percent of the fifty pupils from each of the eight sections of Grade III were taken as sample. Thus, the study investigated forty grade III pupils with ages ranging from 8-13 yrs. old. Seven out of forty pupils were found to be born to mothers with ages ranging from 40-44 yrs. old (Group A) while thirty-three out of forty pupils were found to be born to mothers with ages ranging from 15-28 yrs. old (Group B). These were ages of the mother at the time they gave birth to these children. The two groups were compared as to their mental ability, physical development and psychological status. It is important to note that this study excludes Down Syndrome as a result of pregnancy among mothers with advanced age. To evaluate the mental ability of the children, I.Q. test was done. It was found out that five out of seven passed from group A and thirteen out of thirty-three passed from group B. Thus, perimenopausal children have higher percentage of pupils who passed than the other group. In addition, they also have a higher mean I.Q. With regards to weight and height, the two groups are almost the same in their physical development. In the psychological test given, it was found out in the Quantitative score, a big disparity in the score of the two groups - group A with with X of 83.07% and group B with X of 57.03%. |
