Serum gamma-glutamyltransferase levels after an alcohol challenge in two groups of medical students with different average alcohol consumption / Leilani Lucille Pichay [twenty three others]
Subject(s): Abstract: OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to compare the serum GGT levels of alcohol drinkers and controls METHODOLOGY: Eighteen to 28 year old Filipino male medical students of the University of the Philippines College of Medicine were recruited to answer a self-administered questionnaire determining patterns of alcohol intake. The subjects were then classified as drinkers (drinks alcohol of 60-120 g ethanol) and controls (weekly consumption of not more than 0.57 g ethanol). Serum GGT levels were obtained at baseline, after 28 days of abstinence and after alcohol challenge RESULTS: The GGT levels of the two groups were similar at baseline. Analysis of variance revealed a possible interaction between the grouping and the period of observation. Using the 28 day abstinence values as baseline, there was a difference in the changes in the GGT levels between the two groups after alcohol challenge. The mean GGT value in the drinkers group increased by 3 U/L while the mean GGT value in the control group decreased by 1.6 U/L. This difference was statistically significant (p-value=0.0023) CONCLUSION: These findings showed that the alcohol challenge test can be a diagnostic tool in determining individuals who have regularly ingested alcohol within this studys specified range.| Cover image | Item type | Current library | Home library | Collection | Shelving location | Call number | Materials specified | Vol info | URL | Copy number | Status | Notes | Date due | Barcode | Item holds | Item hold queue priority | Course reserves | |
