Tuberculosis of the conjunctiva : a case report / Ruben L. Bon Siong

Subject(s): Abstract: A 28 year old Filipino male presented with a three year history of left eye redness associated with blurring of vision and a conjunctival mass unresponsive to conventional topical antibiotic therapy. Ocular examination showed a hypertrophic lesion at the left inferior burbar and palpebral conjunctiva with extension to the cornea. A ruptured corneal ulcer with pannus and fibrin-filled anterior chamber was noted. Vision was hand movement with poor light projection. Conjunctival scraping revealed two-plus for acid fast bacilli. Tissue culture grew Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Conjunctival biopsy showed chronic granulomatous inflammation. No other tuberculous foci were found elsewhere in the body. The conjunctival lesions resolved with standard short-course systemic triple anti tuberculous therapy.
