In vitro study on the bactericidal effects of freshly prepared colloidal silver / Winnie P. Siao [and two others]

Contributor(s): Subject(s): Abstract: OBJECTIVE: To determine the bactericidal properties of colloidal silver. METHODOLOGY: This is an experimental study using an open experimental trial method. Different concentrations of freshly prepared colloidal silver (5 ppm, 10 ppm, 20 ppm and 40 ppm) were inoculated in 7 petri dishes containing culture medium of Staphylococcus aureus and were incubated at 35 degrees C for 24 hours. The diameters of the zones of inhibition were measured in mm. The means of the zones of inhibition of the different concentrations of the colloidal silver were compared to a positive (Cloxacillin) and negative (sterile water) controls. RESULTS: Results of the one-sample t-test show that the positive control (Cloxacillin) had a bigger diameter compared to colloidal silver at all concentrations (5 ppm, 10 ppm, 20 ppm and 40 ppm) with a p value < 0.05. Results of the one-sample t-test show that at all concentrations (5 ppm, 10 ppm, 20 ppm and 40 ppm) of colloidal silver had a bigger diameter compared to the negative control (sterile water) with a p value of < 0.05. CONCLUSIONS: Colloidal silver demonstrated better in vitro bactericidal activity on all concentrations (5 ppm, 10 ppm, 20 ppm and 40 ppm) for Staphylococcus compared to the negative control (sterile water) but not as efficacious as Cloxacillin.
