Brawner OBJECTIVE: To determine the socio-behavioral factors influencing the treatment compliance among diabetic patient at Ospital ng Maynila Medical Center - FM OPD DESIGN: Descriptive study using a questionnaire. SETTING: Ospital ng Maynila Medical Center - FM Department, a tertiary hospital. PARTICIPANTS: Patients with diabetes mellitus type 2 enrolled in the Diabetes Clinic, taking no other medications except for diabetes mellitus. 150 satisfied the criteria and 40 were randomly chosen. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE: Collection and interpretation of the answers to the questionnaire addressed to the factors influencing the treatment compliance of patients. RESULTS: There were 28 females and 12 males, whose ages ranged from 42 to 73 years old. Educational attainment has a predominance of elementary education. Eighty seven percent of the respondents were unemployed and were dependent on their children. Fifty percent of the respondents indicated that financial support is sufficient only for their daily expenses while the other half lack financial support. The respondents duration of illness ranged from 4-22 years. 40 percent were insulin requiring while the 60 percent were on oral hypoglycemic drugs. The respondents caregivers (80 percent) were mostly the patients children. Most of the common cause of missed medication intake was failure to buy expensive medicines. Sixty percent of respondents took their medications because their caregivers encouraged them. Diet and exercise were not fully encouraged to the patients. CONCLUSION: Treatment compliance is enhanced by encouragement of the diabetics caregiver who more often than not are the patients children. Missed medications is primarily due to financial constraints.
