A retrospective descriptive study was conducted at the Emergency Room Complex of the Philippine General Hospital from November 7 to December 7, 1989 to obtain baseline data on the profile of antimicrobial prescribing among residents and interns. A review of the charts showed that ninety nine percent of the patients seen at the Emergency Room Complex had community acquired infections, sixty three percent of which were from the respiratory tract. Thirty three percent of patients were prescribed antibiotics. Antibiotics were prescribed for prophylaxis in fifty one percent of patients. Inappropriate antibiotic use was observed in sixty five percent of patients. The inadequacy of basic facilities and supplies needed to implement infection control measures especially in the Emergency Room Complex tended to encourage the prophylactic use of antibiotics. This preliminary study revealed the need for a more intensive campaign on the rational use of antibiotics in the Emergency Room Complex.
