The public health implications of the anti-microbial and anti-fungal activities of certain commercially available spermicides and condoms against Neisseria gonorrheas and Candida albicans /

An in vitro study was performed to determine the anti-microbial and anti-fungal activities of commercial spermicides and condoms against Neisseria gonorrheae and Candida albicans. Using the disc sensitivity procedure, it was found that spermicides and condoms inhibited the growth of the gonococci and C. albicans. Of the contraceptives devices, the spermicides were found to possess greater anti-microbial and anti-fungal activities than the condoms. Majority of the spermicides inhibited all isolates of both the gonococci and C. albicans as compared to the condoms, which were not effective against C. albicans and only moderately effective against the gonococci.
Based on the results, the potentials of the contraceptive device in the prevention and reduction of incidence of STDs has has been recognized. Thus, the use of these chemical and mechanical prophylaxes would be valuable in the planning of effective Public Health measures in that these contraceptive devices could both fit into the family planning program and STD control program in most national health services.
