520 3 _aA one year prospective, descriptive study on the clinical profile and sexual practices of patients consulting for sexual transmitted diseases (STD) at UP-PGH Clinic was undertaken from January to December 1992. STDs common encountered in the 167 patients were gonorrhea (50%) non-specific urethritis (18%), condyloma acuminata (16%), syphilis (13%) and herpes simplex (6%). Clinical profile showed 3:1 M/F ratio, age range of 8-59 years, mostly from Manila and suburbs, predominantly Catholic, single, high school graduates and employed. Most patients were virgin cases presenting with urethral/vaginal discharge, dysuria, skin lesions, pain/inflammation and pruritus. IV drug use and blood transfusion were not common. Almost half were smokers and alcoholic drinkers. Majority had no history of travel outside the country. Sexual history revealed exclusively heterosexual pratice in majority (80.2%) of cases, while exclusively homosexual and bisexual practices were 6.6% and 11.4% respectively. More than half had first sex experience by 19 years of age and a quarter of patients were promiscuous. Half of the patients had sexual encounter with a commercial sex worker (CSW) and encounter with a foreigner was minimal. A quarter were sexually active at a frequency of 2-3 times per week or more. Conventional intercourse was preferred by majority and condom use was not popular in majority of patients Treatment given followed the WHO recommendation with improvement in majority of cases and loss to follow-up rate of about 15%. Beta-lactamase production of Neisseria gonorrhea isolates was 65% with Penicillin G resistance of 70%. Majority of the isolates were sensitive to Cetriaxone or Quinolones.
