520 3 _aSpecialist allergy care has been shown to reduce cost and hospital admissions compared to primary care. We hypothesized that immediate access to asthma educators reduces hospitalization of children with asthma We reviewed the data of 425 children (0 to 17 years old) admitted for asthma through the Emergency Room of Pitt Country Memorial Hospital (PCMH) from October 1, 1996 to September 30, 1999 obtained by PCMH Pediatric Asthma Program. During the same time, we collected data from children with asthma seen at East Carolina University (ECU) Pediatrics Outpatient Clinic and ECU Allergy Clinic obtained by ECU School of Medicine Of the 425 children admitted for asthma, Primary Care Physicians followed 281, Pediatrics 116 and Allergy, 28. In the clinics, there were 3050 visits for asthma, 1393 for Pediatrics and 1657 for Allergy. 1674 patients were seen in clinic for asthma, 1123 by Pediatrics and 551 by Allergy. Access to electronic medical records was available to Allergy clinic only. 116/1123 or 10.3 percent of the Pediatric patients, and 28/551 or 5.2 percent of Allergy patients were admitted to the hospital for asthma exacerbation. 64 percent of patients followed by Pediatrics had mild intermittent and mild persistent asthma and 89 percent of patients followed by the Allergy had moderate to severe persistent asthma Patients managed by the Allergy Specialist have a decreased rate of hospitalization. For optimum asthma management, patients must have immediate access to the physician and/or asthma educators for quick intervention and aggressive modification of the asthma treatment plan over the telephone with asthma exacerbation.
