520 3 _aOBJECTIVE: This study determined the effectiveness of the Hennry-Charles occupationally embedded hand strengthening modality in improving pinch and grip strength of stroke patients from selected rehabilitation centers in Cebu for the year 1998 DESIGN: This study utilized the experimental design SETTING: The study was conducted in the occupational therapy rehabilitation departments of Cebu Doctors Hospital (CDH), San Nicolas Parish Rehabilitation Center (SNPRC), Cebu Doctors College Rehabilitation Center (CDCRC), and Don Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center (DVSMMC) SUBJECTS/PARTICIPANTS: A total of 26 adult stroke outpatients belonging to both sexes who met the inclusion criteria were involved in the study PROCEDURES: The study used two main data collection instruments: a pinch gauge and a grip dynamometer. Before treatments, the therapist administered and recorded the pretest evaluation which consisted of obtaining the scores on 4 areas of performance: (1) grip strength, (2) pad to pad pinch strength, (3) lateral pinch strength, and (4) tripod pinch strength. After the scores were recorded the therapist proceeded to introducing the treatments using the Hennry-Charles occupationally embedded hand strengthening modality for the experimental group and traditional rote strengthening exercise for the control group. The occupationally embedded hand strengthening modality involved placing pinchers and grippers on bars attached to the modality while electronic light flash as a consequence. The traditional rote strengthening exercise involved repetitive grip exercise using grippers and repetitive pinching using pinchers. Grippers and pinchers used were identical in both groups. The treatment occurred at the beginning of OT treatment sessions right after the therapist provided spasticity inhibition. The treatment lasted up to 10 twenty-minute session or days for each patients. On the tenth day of treatment, the therapist administered and recorded the posttest evaluation which was the same evaluation given in the pretest. The pretest & posttest scores in all 4 areas of performance were tabulated and averaged accordingly. Differences between pretest and posttest scores within groups were calculated averaged. The dependent t-test determined the significant mean difference between the control groups pinch and grip strengths before and after its respective treatments, and the experimental groups pinch and grip strengths before and after its respective treatment. This established which group received a more effective treatment
